What Is Oil Cleansing?
Oil cleansing is an ancient Ayurvedic practice of purifying the skin with a botanical oil. You can use jojoba oil or a blend of botanical oils. My personal favorite facial oils are from Living Libations.
You’ve probably heard of oil cleansing like this:
You wash your face with an oil-based cleanser, rinse, then follow up with a foaming water-based cleanser for that squeaky-clean feeling.
I used to do that too—until I discovered what true oil cleansing really is.
The oil cleansing method I use and recommend is an all-in-one cleanse, exfoliant, and moisturizer.

What Oil To Use For Oil Cleansing
Here are the best oil cleansers I recommend to everyone:
- Seabuckthorn – great for normal to acne prone skin
- Sandalwood – great for very sensitive skin
- Frankincense – great for redness and scarring
- Rose – great for dry, mature skin

Does Oil Cleansing Work?
Oil attracts oil, so cleansing with oil is extremely effective because it pulls excess sebum, debris, and impurities from the skin while providing nourishment.
Basically, oil cleansing pulls out the bad stuff and leaves the good stuff.
When you cleanse with oil, your skin won’t feel squeaky clean. Instead, it’ll feel soft and moisturized.
That might feel strange at first if you’re used to the tight, dry sensation from conventional cleansers, but trust me, you will get used to it and grow to love it. After oil cleansing for so long, I can never go back to that stripped, tight feeling again.
What’s Wrong With Conventional Cleansers?

Conventional cleansers are a problem mainly because they strip the skin of everything, including the good stuff like our natural lipids.
When you wash with a soapy, sudsy cleanser, it may seem like you are deeply cleansing your skin, but you are really causing irritation and not cleaning your skin in an effective, healthy way.
Most cleansers on the market contain surfactants, which are damaging to the skin because they dissolve our skin’s natural ceramides, enzymes, and hydro-lipid barrier.
They also get trapped in our skin and remain in the stratum corneum even after rinsing. This leads to irritation and contributes to redness, acne, rosacea, dryness, and other unpleasant skin issues.
Honestly, we would be better off not washing our faces at all than using a foamy, surfactant-filled cleanser!
