Finding a good non toxic mascara has taken me YEARS. I’m super picky when it comes to mascara because I have straight, downward-pointing lashes. Most non toxic mascaras do not hold a curl at all. This is the biggest struggle I’ve encountered when trying to find a good non toxic mascara.
I know many of you have the same struggle, so I wanted to share the best and worst non toxic mascara I’ve found over the years. This will help you decide what to choose and what to skip.
This post is all about the best and worst non toxic mascara for straight, downward-facing lashes.

Best Non Toxic Mascara
1. Living Libations Raven Maven Mascara
This is my all-time favorite mascara. It holds a curl beautifully and it doesn’t clump at all. It also doesn’t give you raccoon eyes by the end of the day. I love that it contains peptides to nourish and strengthen the lashes.
I’ve had my tube for 2 years and I am just now needing to repurchase another one. It also has a silicone wand, which is better than a brush wand because it doesn’t accumulate product residue and dry out.
If you like thick voluminous lashes, this mascara probably isn’t for you because it gives a more natural look, which I personally love. I give this mascara a 10/10 rating.
PROS
Lasts For Years
Contains Peptides
Silicone Wand
Sustainable Packaging
Zero clumping
No transfer to under eyes
Water-resistant
CONS
Doesn’t provide a ton of thickness or volume
2. Lily Lolo Mascara
Lily Lolo has two types of mascara: natural and big lash. The natural mascara is supposed to look, well, natural, and the big lash mascara is supposed to provide more thickness and volume. I put the natural mascara on one eye and the big lash mascara on my other eye.
I could not tell a difference at all between the two, however, I prefer the big lash wand. I felt like it coated my lashes a little better.
They both held my curl beautifully and I liked how soft the formula felt. I give the big lash mascara a 9/10 rating and the natural mascara an 8/10 rating because I didn’t like the wand as much.
PROS
Soft, gentle formula suitable for sensitive eyes
Smooth application
Natural, organic ingredients
Holds Curl
Zero clumping
No transfer to under eyes
CONS
Big lash didn’t provide any extra length or volume
3. Eyes That TOK Lash Enhancing Mascara
I really liked this mascara because it wasn’t clumpy and it held my curl pretty well. I also love the length it gave my lashes!
It contains strengthening and lengthening ingredients such as horsetail, pea protein, and bayberry fruit wax.
My only cons to this mascara would be that I did have a little black under my eyes by the end of the day, so I give this mascara a rating of 8/10.
PROS
Nourishing ingredients
Silicone Wand
Zero clumping
Semi-waterproof
Lengthening
CONS
A little transfer to under eyes
4. Kosas The Big Clean Mascara
I was very surpised by this mascara. They market this as a “falsie” look saying your lashes will be big and fluffy, but I actually though it gave my lashes a very pretty, natural finish. I really like how my lashes turned out, but I feel like some people who want that bold look will be disappointed.
I didn’t love the wand shape, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. Overall, I really liked this mascara a lot, especially since it held my curl so well! I give it a 8/10 rating.
PROS
Holds curl
Zero clumping
Pretty, natural finish
Buildable formula
Peptides, castor oil, and vitamins ensure your lashes are long and healthy
CONS
Wand shape
Not as volumizing as it claims
5. Tower 28 Mascara
This mascara gives a more voluminous, thick finish to my lashes. I don’t love the shape of the wand, but I do like the formula.
I feel like it holds the curl pretty well throughout the whole day, but I did have some trouble removing it. It was hard to get it all the way off, but other than that I do like it. I give this mascara a rating of 7/10.
PROS
Holds curl
Zero clumping
Thick & voluminous
Good for sensitive eyes
CONS
Wand shape
Hard to remove
Worst Non Toxic Mascara
I want to preface this section by saying these did not work FOR ME, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t work for anyone else. I only want to recommend products that I truly love and these were not it.
1. Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara + Lash Primer
I was excited to try this mascara because I love the Honest Beauty brand and have heard good things about their mascara. However, when I tried it I was very disappointed with the results.
The mascara comes with a primer that you put on your lashes before the mascara. I did one eye with the primer and one eye without the primer.
As you can see the eye with the primer has absolutely zero curl. It weighed down my lashes and did nothing for them. The other eye without the primer held my curl a little bit, but after about 20 minutes they had gone back down.
I also hated how clumpy the formula was, so I have to give this a rating of 1/10. I give it 1 point because the primer is a unique concept.
PROS
Contains a lash primer
CONS
Clumping
Weighs down lashes
Doesn’t hold a curl
2. LüK Beautifood Lash Nourish Natural Mascara (Brown)
This mascara did not hold my curl at all. They have a black mascara, but I wanted to try the brown to switch it up a little. The brown didn’t work for me, but I think it’s a great option for those who like a very natural look. I give this a 3/10 rating.
PROS
Brown and black color options
Natural finish
Nourishing ingredients
CONS
Doesn’t hold any curl
Doesn’t provide much volume or thickness
3. 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented® Ultra Lengthening Mascara
Even though this mascara did not work for me, I really liked the ingredients in their formula. It’s made entirely of plants. It even smells like blueberries, which I thought was pretty cool.
Unfortunately, it did not hold my curl and it transferred to my under eyes. I kept having to wipe my eyes throughout the day. I give this mascara a 5/10 because I really do like the ingredients and formula, it just didn’t give me that curl or long wear.
PROS
Amazing ingredient list
Has 4 different color options
CONS
Transfer to under eyes
Smell may be bothersome to some people
Doesn’t hold curl
4. RMS Straight Up™ Volumizing Peptide Mascara
I really like the RMS makeup line, but this mascara did not do it for my straight, downward-facing lashes. It held the curl a little bit, but not enough for my high standards.
I did like the brush because it was big and fluffy so it could coat all of the lashes nicely. I give this mascara a rating of 4/10.
PROS
Wand provides easy application
Contains Peptides
Minimal clumping
No transfer to under eyes
CONS
Doesn’t hold curl
Wand is made of bristles so may get clumpy and dry out after a while
5. Ogee Beyond Clean Volumizing Mascara
As soon as I put this mascara on my lashes I could feel the heaviness of it. It instantly weighed down my lashes back to their straight, downward-facing position.
It’s a very thick formula, which is great if you want to add heaviness and thickness to your lashes, but it did not work for me.
I’d have to give this a rating of 3/10. I liked the formula and ingredients, but everything else did not impress.
PROS
Strengthening and nourishing ingredients
77% organic ingredients
Buildable formula
CONS
Very thick
Weighs down lashes
Doesn’t hold curl
Has a strong smell
Best Overall
There are a lot of great non toxic mascaras out there, but if you want them to hold your curl and last all day, my top recommendation would be the Living Libations mascara. I promise you will not be disappointed!
