Before we get to the list of best non toxic laundry detergents, I wanted to share some ingredients you should avoid.
Toxic ingredients to avoid in detergent:
- Sulfates
- Synthetics fragrances
- Bleach
- Parabens
- Formaldehyde
- Dyes
- Optical brighteners
- Chlorine
- 1,4-Dioxane
- Methylisothiazolinone
- Phthalates
- Phosphates
- Synthetic Nonylphenol Ethoxylates
- Propylene glycol
- Ethanolamine
It’s important to avoid these ingredients because they can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, acne, and disrupt your hormones, just to name a few.
All of the detergents I’ve listed below have none of these toxic ingredients and clean your clothes EVEN BETTER than conventional detergents.
1. Truly Free
This is by far my favorite laundry detergent I have ever tried. Your laundry will smell so fresh and clean afterward!
I also love the refillable packets. You start with a detergent packet and a bottle. Then, you only have to order the refillable laundry detergent packets afterward.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Smells amazing | Some may not like the smell (there is an unscented version) |
Sustainable detergent refill packets | |
Clothes smell clean and fresh for weeks! |
2. Molly Suds
This is my second favorite laundry detergent I’ve tried. It cleans really well and I love how refreshing the peppermint scent is!
The bag is also really big, so it lasts a long time; however, it is plastic, so it’s not the most sustainable option.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Has a fresh peppermint scent | Plastic packaging |
Gets rid of odors | |
Good for sensitive skin |

3. Branch Basics
The best part about Branch Basics laundry is their oxygen boost powder. It gets the stains out really well and helps to whiten and brighten your clothes.
The only thing I don’t love about Branch Basics laundry detergent is that they say you only have to use 3/4 of a cap per load, and the cap is tiny. It’s probably just a little over a tablespoon.
I never felt like my clothes were getting very clean with that little amount! Maybe it’s because I’m used to overusing detergent.
It also has no smell, so I always had to use the oxygen boost powder with the detergent to fight odors.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Oxygen boost gets rid of odors | Might not feel “clean” enough for some |
Oxygen boost whitens, brightens, and gets rid of stains | Doesn’t have a fresh scent |
Sustainable glass container option |
4. Blueland
Blueland has the cutest packaging! I love their little laundry tablet tin. You start off with the tin and laundry tablets, then you buy the tablets in a bag to refill. I just love the way this tin looks on the shelf!
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Sustainable | Some people may not like the aesthetic of the tin |
Paper package is compostable | Some may prefer unscented |
Comes in a cute tin | |
Easy to use (kids can help out!) | |
Clean, fresh scent |
5. Vinegar
That’s right! You can use vinegar to clean your clothes. It’s that simple.
And no, your clothes will not smell like vinegar. I usually add vinegar to my laundry cycles along with my detergent, but if you really want to go completely natural, you can use vinegar alone!
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Cost effective | Some may not like that it doesn’t have a scent |
Completely natural | |
Gets rid of odors | |
Softens hard water |
6. Charlie’s Soap
This is a really solid laundry detergent. It cleans really well, and I love how sudsy it gets!
It doesn’t have a strong fragrance, which I also liked. You just need one scoop per load, which lasts a long time.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Sudsy | Plastic packaging |
Long-lasting | |
No harsh fragrances | |
Effective cleaning power | |
Gets rid of odors |
7. Borax
Okay I looveee Borax. I always put it in my laundry. I like to use Borax along with my detergent, but you can totally use it on its own.
Whenever I don’t use Borax, my clothes are noticeably less clean. I also love how cheap it is. I literally have no cons!
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Gets rid of stains | |
Brightens | |
No harsh fragrances | |
Effective cleaning power | |
Gets rid of odors | |
Cost effective |
8. Zum
Whenever I use this detergent, it fills my entire laundry room with the fresh smell of lavender, and I love it! It’s also very inexpensive for such a big bottle.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Smells great | Some may not like fragrance |
All natural fragrances | |
Gets rid of odors | |
Cost effective |
