What is holistic dentistry?
Holistic dentistry focuses on more than just your teeth. It focuses on whole-body health, such as diet and sleep.
It addresses the root cause of oral health problems and uses a proactive approach to prevent health issues from arising.
I’ve been going to a holistic dentist (also known as a biological dentist) for more than two years now. They had me do a sleep study to see how well I was sleeping. They also examined my whole head and neck to make sure my airways looked good, my tongue posture was correct and much more.
It was such an in-depth appointment and the doctor took her time to go over everything with me.
They even asked me questions like “were you breastfed as a baby?” because breastfeeding plays a major role in jaw development.
So much impacts the health of our mouths that mainstream dentists are not taught.
The health of my mouth has transformed since transitioning to holistic dentistry. I used to get canker sores, have bleeding gums, and bad plaque. Now I have none of those issues at all!

Holistic Dentistry vs. Traditional Dentistry
Like I mentioned above, holistic dentistry focuses on whole body health, not just the mouth. Holistic dentists view the mouth as part of the entire body, not a separate entity.
They address the root causes of dental issues and work on preventing diseases and other issues.
Traditional dentists do not view the mouth in a holistic way and they do not focus on prevention. They focus on diagnosing and treating dental issues by using “band-aid” approaches that do not get to the root cause of the issues.
Examples of Holistic Dentistry
- Avoid mercury and metals in fillings
- Avoid using fluoride
- Avoid root canals
- Provide healthy lifestyle guidance for full-body well-being
- Use ozone therapy to kill bacteria and promote healing without drilling or removing tooth pulp
- Prioritize prevention of dental issues
- Treat dental issues by getting to the root cause
How does oral care relate to skincare?
You may be wondering why I’m talking to you about oral care when I’m an esthetician and specialize in skincare.
It’s because everything is connected! Bad oral care equals bad health, which equals unhealthy skin.
Think about it this way…
Your mouth is the gateway to our insides. If it is not healthy and properly taken care of, it impacts your whole body, which impacts your skin.
Since becoming a holistic esthetician I have realized that every little thing matters and adds up.
Of course, we cannot control everything, so don’t worry about the things that are out of your hands, but using non toxic oral care is definitely within your control.
We brush our teeth and floss every single day. If you’re using crap products to do that, think about how much damage you are causing over time.
It’s easy to switch once you know the right products. I will list some of my faves below!
