You may be wondering: does at home LED light therapy work? As a licensed esthetician I’m here to tell you that it does!

It’s actually one of my most favorite skincare tools and if you have the means, you should definitely invest in one because it’s a game changer for your skin.

In this post I will be breaking down everything there is to know about LED light therapy, so get ready cuz it’s about to get science-y!

After reading this post you’re going to know exactly why at home LED light therapy is one of the best devices to have on hand for beautiful, healthy skin.

This post is all about answering the question: does at home LED light therapy work?

Why At Home LED Light Therapy?

Not everyone has the time, money, or desire to go to a spa and get an LED light therapy treatment. At-home LED light therapy is extremely convenient and can save you lots of time and money without sacrificing quality.

How to Use LED Light Therapy at Home

This is a step-by-step routine of how to use LED light therapy at home:

  1. Make sure your skin is clean before using LED. This will allow the light to penetrate your skin properly.
  2. Once you’re done with the LED treatment, you can continue with the rest of your skincare routine.
  3. The LED helps with product absorption, meaning whatever products you use after the treatment will be more effective.
  4. LED light therapy can be done for 30 minutes 4 times a week.

*Tip: Hydrating the skin with a mist after cleansing is optional before the LED treatment. You could also wait to mist after the LED treatment. Misting can be done whenever you feel your skin needs it!

Amazing Benefits

LED light therapy is one of my favorite skin health tools. Here are some reasons why I love it:

  • Treats many issues from muscle and joint pain to acne and wrinkles
  • Extremely safe
  • Noninvasive
  • Painless
  • No harmful side effects
  • Relaxing
  • Easy to use
  • Chemical-free

It seems too good to be true, right? How can a device that emits a colorful light have such an incredible effect on our skin?

My clients in the past have been skeptical, but once I show them their faces in the mirror after a LED facial treatment, they are amazed. It’s probably my favorite part of a facial when I lift up the device to reveal their visibly healthier skin.

But what is LED light therapy exactly?

How It Works

Just like plants convert sunlight into energy, our skin converts LED light into energy. The LED penetrates deep into the skin and activates the ATP in the skin cells so that they have more energy to perform optimally.

For example, fibroblasts will have the energy to increase collagen and elastin production, which helps to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles in the skin.

Types of LED Light

There are 3 types of LED light that have been heavily researched and proven to work in the skin and body:

  • Blue
  • Red
  • Near-infrared

You may see other LED devices out there that use green light, but there isn’t enough scientific evidence to support it.

Green light supposedly helps to reduce hyperpigmentation, but the wavelengths are not long enough to reach melanocytes, the cells in the skin that produce the pigment melanin.

Green wavelengths also do not penetrate the skin deep enough to reach dermal chromophores, the molecules that absorb light energy. There needs to be more research done to prove that this light has an effect on the skin.

I have also heard yellow light being used for rosacea and sensitive skin, but I’d rather choose blue light for that.

All this being said, if you’ve tried green or yellow LED light therapy and noticed an improvement in your skin, then that’s great!

If it works for you, then I say keep using it.

I am just telling you why I prefer blue, red, and near-infrared LED light because it definitely works and is 100% backed by science.

Blue Light

As someone who struggles with sensitive skin, redness, and acne, I really love blue light.

Blue light kills acne-causing bacteria, P. acnes, at the source, so it helps clear acne, reduces inflammation, and improves the tone and texture of the skin.

Red Light

Red light is amazing for helping with aging gracefully.

It reduces fine lines and wrinkles, evens skin tone, improves pigmentation and sun damage, and it provides overall healthier skin. It also induces more collagen production, speeds up wound healing, and reduces scarring.

Both red and blue light work beautifully together to help balance oil production and reduce inflammation and acne.

Using blue and red LED light therapy together is a must for healthy, glowing skin!

Near Infrared Light

This type of light goes deep into the tissues, organs, and joints.

It’s great for many things:

  • PMS
  • Muscle soreness and tension
  • Joint pain
  • Wound healing
  • Improving sleep
  • Improving blood circulation
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Cellular repair

It pretty much helps everything!

I love that this device promotes beauty on the inside and the outside. You will notice that you are improving your appearance while also improving the way your body functions. It’s incredible!

Which At Home LED Device Is Best?

There are many LED devices on the market, but that does not mean they all work the same. Many of them will not deliver good results because they aren’t well made.

A great one is Dr. Dennis Gross’s LED face mask. It contains both red and blue light-emitting diodes to clear acne and help with signs of aging. It’s literally a spa treatment in your own home!

So if you’re ready to take your skincare game up to a whole new level, I definitely recommend you try the Dr. Dennis Gross light therapy device, and as always please comment if you have any questions!
