1. Exfoliating Body Wash
When you have acne your skin produces way more keratin than it should. This is known as hyperkeratosis and it causes pores to clog.
Your skin cannot shed all of that dead skin off properly on its own, so adding an exfoliating body wash to your daily shower routine is a must.
You want to opt for body washes that have acids like mandelic or salicylic because they will deeply clean out the pores. It’s also great if they have some sort of manual exfoliation in there, too.
I recommend this Clearstem cleanser for face and body wash. It works super well and I like that comes in a big bottle. You also only need to use a small amount because a little goes a long way.
2. Moisturize Your Body
Just because you have body acne doesn’t mean you should skip your moisturizer! In fact, the opposite is true.
You want to make sure your skin is well-hydrated and moisturized to prevent excess sebum production.
It’s also important that whatever body moisturizer you use contains no pore-clogging ingredients.
Some ingredients to avoid are:
- Shea Butter
- Coconut Oil
- Petrolatum
- Cocoa Butter
- Lanolin
- Synthetic Fragrances
- Ethylhexyl Palmitate
- Diisostearyl Malate
- Parabens
Tip: Make sure your body moisturizer contains both oil and water-based ingredients such as aloe vera and jojoba oil so you are properly hydrating and moisturizing your body.
These are a few body moisturizers I recommend that will not clog pores or cause breakouts:
3. Body Acne Spray
Body acne spray, or hypochlorous acid, is a really great product to have on hand when you’re working out or have an acne flare-up.
Our body naturally produces hypochlorous acid in our white blood cells to protect against infection.
It’s also very healing which is why it is perfect for acne.
It helps fight acne bacteria, but also soothes inflammation and can help heal scars.
Tip: spray on your chest and back (or wherever you are acne-prone) before and after a sweaty workout to prevent breakouts.
4. Zinc Sunscreen
If you’ve been reading my posts for a while now, you know that I love the sun; however, it’s important to get sun in moderation.
Going outside is so important for our overall health, but you always want to prevent sunburn! This is where sunscreen comes into play.
Zinc sunscreen can actually help body acne because zinc is anti-inflammatory. The sun can worsen pigmentation caused by acne so putting on a zinc sunscreen before going out will ensure your skin stays clear and bright!
These are some of my favorite zinc sunscreens that help with acne and pigmentation:

5. Hair Products
Using hair products with acne-causing ingredients can lead to body acne, especially if you have long hair that touches your back, shoulders, and arms.
Tip: wash your hair first in the shower, then go in with your acne-clearing body wash to make sure there is no hair product residue left on your body.
I recommend using clean hair products made from all-natural ingredients. Rahua, Oway, Living Libations, and Clearstem are a few brands I recommend that do not have pore-clogging ingredients and are completely non-toxic.

6. Clothes
Wearing clothes that are made from synthetic fibers such as polyester can contribute to body acne.
Synthetic fibers are not breathable, so opt for clothes made of cotton, silk, linen, and other natural fibers. These materials are not harsh or irritating to the skin. Plus, they are more sustainable!
7. Laundry Detergent
Laundry detergent can be super irritating to our skin especially if you are using laundry products that contain waxes and fragrances. You’ll want to opt for a detergent that is nontoxic and preferably fragrance-free.
Also stay away from fabric softener because that leaves a wax film on your clothes, which can cause breakouts on your body.
These are some safe detergents to use that will clean your clothes effectively and keep your skin clear:
